    The Picture of Dorian Gray is a American horror-drama film based on Oscar Wilde's novel of the same ed in June by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the film is directed by Albert Lewin and stars George Sanders as Lord Henry Wotton and Hurd Hatfield as Dorian Gray. Shot primarily in black-and-white, the film features four colour inserts in 3-strip Technicolor of Dorian's portrait. This title works on a few levels. First of all, it is quite simply a portrait of an artist. Second, it is a not-so-subtly-hidden of the artist, James Joyce himself. Third, the title places the book in a certain tradition of self-portraits.
